Plants, Floral Design, and Gardening.

Mission

Our goal is to promote interest and increase knowledge of horticulture,  to develop skills in flower arranging and to aid and encourage the beautification of home grounds and public places.

About Us

The Brewster-Carmel Garden Club is a membership organization who welcomes anyone interested in plants, floral  design and gardens!

Our Club has ten regular meetings a year, held on the second Tuesday of each month at Cornerstone Park, 1 Fair Street,  Carmel, NY, 10512.

Our programs include interesting speakers on varied topics relating to design and horticulture.

We usually take several exciting field trips to nearby gardens, herb fairs, and horticulture shows, as well as  offer volunteer opportunities. Learn more about our activities

Members can be as involved as their schedules allow and include not only Brewster and Carmel residents but also from neighboring New York and Connecticut communities.

Community Activities

Our club conducts a number of on-going community activities, including:

Civic Beautification

Members plant and maintain gardens in public places in Brewster at the Library, the Blue Star Memorial at the Metro-North Train Station, Veterans Honor Roll, Milltown Cemetery and Town of Southeast Town Hall. In Carmel, members hang and maintain baskets suspended on sidewalk lamp posts, plant and maintain the gardens at both the Sybil  Ludington Statue and Cornerstone Park and the Blue Star Memorial in front of the Putnam Courthouse.

Dig Deep Navajo Water Project

Members donate money at each meeting for the Navajo Water Project, a community-managed utility alternative which brings hot and cold running water to Navajo homes in Basa, New Mexico.

Garden Therapy

In conjunction with Putnam Hospital Center, members provide a therapeutic gardening program to the hospital’s day patient program.

Scholarships

Our Club awards two graduating high school seniors, one resident from Brewster/Southeast and one from Carmel, who are going on to college to major in fields of study related to horticulture and the environment.

Spring Plant Sale

Every year the club orders a wide variety of flowering annuals and herbs in flats, pots and baskets as well as shade and sun perennial flowers from a local grower and sells them to members, their friends and neighbors. This is our main fundraiser event that supports our civic beautification efforts.

National Garden Club Week

In June members design flower arrangements and place them in public places and county office buildings in celebration of National Garden Club week.

Fall Festival

The club participates in the Brewster Fall Festival celebration where members staff a table to engage the public and promote awareness of our organization, as well as sell cuttings of their plants and garden items at reduced prices.

Christmas Decorating

Every December members decorate the historic Walter Brewster House in Brewster, and purchase and decorate wreaths which are delivered to libraries and veterans. Members also decorate a Christmas tree at Putnam Hospital Center Ambulatory Surgery Unit.

Flower Shows

Every three to four years the club holds a flower show at a  community site. The show features a design class,    a horticulture class and educational exhibits.
